Wednesday 10/25/1899: Pitcher Of The Year winners announced
Awards may not be the most important thing for Cy Swaim, but Cleveland's right-hander smiled as he was named the American League Pitcher Of The Year winner. Cy has a record of 27-8 this season, with an ERA of 2.44. In 331.2 Innings he was able to strike out 111 batters. Cy has pitched 3 shutouts and 31 complete games. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The 1899 National League Pitcher Of The Year winner is from Brooklyn this year. Larry Mckeon put together impressive numbers on the mound this season as well. This season Mckeon compiled an ERA of 2.13, going 26-10 in 43 starts. He fanned 343 while giving up 277 hits in 371.1 innings. Larry has pitched 4 shutouts and 32 complete games. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Baltimore's leftfielder Fred Clarke had a fabulous season, no doubt about it. The American League shared this opinion and names the 27 year old the Hitter Of The Year winner! His season numbers are: .353 AVG, 217 hits, 53 doubles, 20 triples and 3 longballs, along with 62 RBI and 122 runs scored. He's 3rd in the American League in batting! New York (N)'s first baseman Hugh Duffy had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The National League shared this opinion and names the 32 year old the Hitter Of The Year winner! Hugh has gone 185 for 561 (.330) this season, hitting 8 bombs and driving in 91 runs. He has scored 109 runs on his own. He's 5th in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 5th in RBI! Duffy wins the award for the 4th time in his 11-year career.
 
Wednesday 10/25/1899: Rookie Of The Year winners announced
The 1899 American League Rookie Of The Year winner is from Louisville this season. Jerry Nops put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Let's hope more will follow for this 24 year old ballplayer. Jerry has a record of 19-10 this season, with an ERA of 2.64. In 272.2 Innings he was able to strike out 116 batters. He has 29 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 8th in wins! Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Brooklyn's Willie Clark smiled as he was named the National League Rookie Of The Year winner. He has hit 4 homeruns while batting .328 this season. Tuesday 10/3/1899: Win Mercer dominates Washington, gives up just 2 hits
COLUMBUS - Columbus' Win Mercer overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Washington had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. Mercer (12-17) struck out 4 and issued 3 BB, throwing 68 of 116 pitches for strikes. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Nap Lajoie provided Columbus with the offense Mercer needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. Columbus scored 6 runs on 7 hits.
 
Monday 10/2/1899: Columbus' Stahl wins Player of the Week award
Columbus' rightfielder Chick Stahl had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Chick was on fire, hitting .429 with 0 HR and 5 RBI. Zeke Wrigley from St. Louis (N) wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .591 with 9 RBI and slugged .864 in 22 at bats.
 
Sunday 10/1/1899: Stivetts and Quarles receive Pitcher of the Month award
Jack Stivetts couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He had an ERA of just 1.29 in 62.2 innings of work in which he struck out 50 hitters. His record in September is 6-1. In 41 starts this year Jack struck out 277 batters in 352.1 innings of work. His ERA is 3.17, his record 21-16. Jack has pitched 2 shutouts and 32 complete games. He's 4th in the American League in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Cincinnati's Bill Quarles. He struck out 29 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 29 innings. BOSTON (N) - Eddie Burke is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. Hit number 4 followed in the 6th inning, a two-run triple. Number 5 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 358 feet, cleared the wall in right field. He collected singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 2nd inning and in the 4th inning (one RBI). Doc Mcjames of Indianapolis wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Doc went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.00, while fanning 16 in 18 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Boston (N)'s Ned Garvin this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Ned went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 6 in 17 innings of work. A complete game added to his brilliant performance.
 
Wednesday 9/13/1899: Cy Young dominates Washington, gives up just one hit
WASHINGTON - Cy Young had some fun again. Washington hitters did not. Cleveland's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 45 career shutouts in 410 games started. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Young (18-15) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 2, throwing 123 pitches. Patsy Donovan helped Young at the plate, he stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double. Cleveland scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
 
Monday 9/11/1899: Burkett and Mccarthy win Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Jesse Burkett, Indianapolis' starting rightfielder. He hit .696 with 4 RBI and slugged 1.087 in 23 at bats. Burkett has hit for a .314 average this season. He has 35 extra base hits along with 205 total bases, resulting in a .429 slugging percentage. Sunday 9/10/1899: Philadelphia (N)'s Getzien out for 6-7 weeks
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Philadelphia (N)'s right-hander Charlie Getzien suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 6-7 weeks. In the 4th of the game against Chicago (N) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Getzien was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Bicep Tendon. His ERA of 3.43 helped him to a 12-11 record this year. He struck out 129 and walked 46 in 241.1 innings. Charlie has pitched 3 shutouts and 21 complete games.
 
Sunday 9/10/1899: New York (N)'s Hugh Duffy gets milestone hit
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s first baseman Hugh Duffy already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. With no outs in the 6th inning, Hugh drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Hugh collected 87 homeruns and 952 RBI in 11 seasons. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
 
Monday 9/4/1899: St. Louis (N)'s Murphy wins Player of the Week award
It's the 4th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Baltimore's pitcher Rube Waddell. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.00 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. St. Louis (N)'s pitcher Con Murphy had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Murphy was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 9 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well.
 
Friday 9/1/1899: Toad Ramsey earns 300th career win
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s left-hander Toad Ramsey already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one as he picked up his 300th career win. Toad Ramsey threw 123 pitches in 8.1 innings, 70 for strikes. He allowed 2 earned runs while striking out 4 and walking 2 earned runs. His career features a 2.93 ERA, along with 3039 K's in 4703 innings. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He set a career high with 25 wins in 1894. Ramsey won 20 or more games a season 8 times. The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.
 
Friday 9/1/1899: Waddell (BAL) and Conway (BSN) win monthly pitcher award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Baltimore's Rube Waddell. He went 5-1 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 1.02. He struck out 37 in 53 innings. BROOKLYN - When it rains, it pours. Brooklyn's right-hander Bill Reidy will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cincinnati where he left the field in the 4th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Pulled Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. Bill has a record of 12-8 this season, with an ERA of 2.98. In 223.1 Innings he was able to strike out 78 batters. He has 19 complete games and one shutout.
 
Monday 8/28/1899: Player of the Week honors go to Stephenson and Goodfellow
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Baltimore's Dummy Stephenson this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .560 with 7 RBI and slugged .960 in 25 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Brooklyn's Mike Goodfellow, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 26 at bats he hit .500 with 0 HR and 9 RBI.
 
Thursday 8/24/1899: Pittsburgh's George Van haltren laces 2000th career hit
CINCINNATI - Pittsburgh's rightfielder George Van haltren was in good mood after the game against Cincinnati, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 3rd off Warren Fitzgerald for number 2000. In 12 years of big league action so far, George has compiled a batting average of .288, along with 41 homeruns and 806 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.'
 
Tuesday 8/22/1899: Bill Phillips (PHA) will miss 6 weeks
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s pitcher Bill Phillips was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 4th inning of the game between Philadelphia (A) and Cleveland. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Phillips will miss about 6 weeks. Philadelphia (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Phillips had suffered a Fractured Cheekbone. His ERA of 3.51 helped him to a 18-8 record this year. He struck out 104 and walked 71 in 249 innings. He's 3rd in the American League in wins!

Reidy (12-8) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 109 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Henry Yaik helped Reidy at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB. ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s ace Nick Altrock will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Boston (N) on Wednesday. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Altrock compiled an ERA of 3.07, going 17-10 in 33 starts. He fanned 92 while giving up 282 hits in 284.2 innings. He has 25 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 10th in the National League in ERA and 4th in wins!

PHILADELPHIA (A) - Philadelphia (A)'s right-hander Jack Sutthoff will never forget this day. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Columbus on Tuesday. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Sutthoff (3-3) struck out 3 and walked 3, throwing 62 of 112 pitches for strikes. Tommy Leach helped Sutthoff at the plate, he went 2 for 3, and driving in 2 runs. The final score of the game was 7-0.

Sunday 8/13/1899: Jake Hewitt fires PERFECT GAME against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - St. Louis (N)'s lefty Jake Hewitt is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Cincinnati on no hits. The crowd of 34178 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. Hewitt (21-10) struck out 5 and walked none, throwing 62 of 96 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' Bill Keister helped Hewitt at the plate, he finished 3 for 5, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.

BROOKLYN - Great days are rare. But not for Brooklyn's right-hander Larry Mckeon. Philadelphia (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 82nd time he has done it in his career. Mckeon (21-5) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 2, throwing 108 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Joe Sullivan provided Brooklyn with the offense Mckeon needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB. The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Louisville's John Pickett this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. John was on fire, hitting .571 with 0 HR and 9 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. John is hitting .331 this year, with 115 hits in 347 at bats. He has driven in 55 runs, slugging .398. He's 6th in the American League in batting! Jake Stenzel from Cincinnati wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Jake was on fire, hitting .565 with 0 HR and 2 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .353, Jake hit .309 and slugged .444. He has collected 42 runs batted in this year.

BALTIMORE - When it rains, it pours. Baltimore's right-hander Vic Willis will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Boston (A) where he left the field in the 3rd inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Back Muscle. In 20 starts this year Vic struck out 82 batters in 168 innings of work. His ERA is 3.70, his record 9-8.
 
Tuesday 8/1/1899: Jack Doyle drills 5 hits
CINCINNATI - Jack Doyle hits 'em where they ain't. Cincinnati certainly agrees as Philadelphia (N)'s second baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. CINCINNATI - When it rains, it pours. Cincinnati's ace Pete Conway will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Elbow Ligament which will require surgery. Pete has a record of 13-11 this season, with an ERA of 2.28. Friday 7/21/1899: Sam Dungan punishes Indianapolis with six hits
INDIANAPOLIS - Sam Dungan is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 2nd hit was a RBI double off Bobby Wallace in the 2nd inning. His 3rd hit was a double off Bobby Wallace in the 4th inning. He collected singles in the 1st (one RBI) , in the 7th , in the 9th inning and in the 12th . Harry Taylor wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .565 and hit .545, while driving in 4 runs. John Shearon of Philadelphia (N) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.50 while going 2-0. BOSTON (N) - Boston (N)'s Topsy Hartsel suffered a serious injury Thursday in a game against Cincinnati. Hartsel fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 8 weeks. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Ankle which will require surgery. He has hit 4 longballs while batting .378 this season. His 104 hits and 44 walks add up to a .463 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 6th in RBI!
 
Tuesday 7/11/1899: Ed Dugan quiets New York (N) bats with shutout
NEW YORK (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Ed Dugan is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. New York (N) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Dugan 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 29th shutouts in his career. Ginger Beaumont spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with no outs in the 5th inning. Dugan (12-4) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 117 pitches. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' The hitting star for Chicago (N) was second baseman Bill Lange, he went 3 for 5, doubling once, scoring two runs. The final score of the game was 7-0.

Sunday 7/9/1899: King Bailey dominates Cleveland, gives up just 2 hits
LOUISVILLE - Louisville's left-hander King Bailey is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cleveland found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. With two outs in the 5th inning Harry Wolverton singled to break up the no-hitter. Bailey (7-4) fanned 2 and walked 1, throwing 116 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Heinie Peitz provided Louisville with the offense Bailey needed as he went 2 for 4, stroking a double. Louisville improved its record to 48-37, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits.
 
Saturday 7/8/1899: Shorty Wetzel turns in great performance against Pittsburgh
BROOKLYN - Shorty Wetzel took the mound and never left. And Pittsburgh hitters couldn't touch him at all. Brooklyn's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. Broken Wrist was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. CLEVELAND - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Columbus' leftfielder Socks Seybold after the 20-3 win over Cleveland. Number 1 in the 1st inning accounted for a two-run double. Number 2 in the 3rd inning accounted for a double. His 4th hit, a three-run homerun off Walter Thornton in the 7th inning, landed an estimated 360 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 5th (one RBI) and in the 8th inning . Socks scored one run, and he collected 6 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 71 hits in 217 at bats, resulting in a .327 batting average.

Team officials were informed later that Wood had suffered a Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. Opposing players hit .218 against Pete this season. NEW YORK (N) - Cincinnati's centerfielder Mike Griffin already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Thursday 6/1/1899: Boston (N)'s Anderson named Pitcher of the Month
It's the 2nd time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Indianapolis' pitcher Jack Stivetts. His ERA of just 1.31 helped him to a 4-2 record in May. He worked 62 innings, striking out 49 hitters while walking 11. Jack got two complete game shutouts as well! In 15 starts this year Jack struck out 116 batters in 131.2 innings of work. PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's leftfielder Mike Tiernan already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. He struck out 67 in 79 innings. Rube got two complete game shutouts as well! It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Brooklyn's pitcher Tully Sparks. He went 5-3 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 2.03. He struck out 21 in 71 innings. Tully pitched THREE complete game shutouts!

The American League Player of the Week award goes to Charlie Dewald, one of Boston (A)'s best starting pitchers. Charlie went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.59, while fanning 4 in 17 innings of work. A complete game added to his brilliant performance. Brooklyn's pitcher Tully Sparks had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Sparks was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 2 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts!
 
Saturday 4/29/1899: Cincinnati's Handiboe severely injured
CINCINNATI - Cincinnati is without its ace Jim Handiboe for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to John Grim in a game against Philadelphia (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Cincinnati wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Handiboe had suffered a Ruptured Bicep Tendon. Opposing players hit .198 against Jim this season. While posting an ERA of 2.78 he went 3-4 in 8 starts, fanning 63 and walking 19 hitters.
 
Tuesday 4/25/1899: Bill Banks pitches 2-hit shutout against Washington
WASHINGTON - Cleveland's right-hander Bill Banks will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Washington on Tuesday. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Banks (3-2) struck out 3 and walked 2, throwing 76 of 124 pitches for strikes. Joe Quinn helped Banks at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0.
 
Monday 4/24/1899: Waddell (BAL) and Clark (BRO) win P.O.W. award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Baltimore's Rube Waddell this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Cleveland's Joe Quinn this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Joe pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .565 with 3 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.043. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Tully Sparks, one of Brooklyn's best starting pitchers. Sparks was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.50. Along the way he struck out 4 in 18 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .250 against Tully this season. While posting an ERA of 2.83 he went 2-2 in 4 starts, fanning 8 and walking 8 hitters. He has 4 complete games and one shutout.
 
Saturday 4/15/1899: Emmet Heidrick uncorks five hits against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - Emmet Heidrick is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A pitch from Tom Lipp in the 1st inning left his bat for a double. A triple off Tom Lipp in the 7th inning, accounted for his 4th hit. Hit number 5 followed in the 9th inning, a triple. He collected singles in the 3rd and in the 5th . Emmet scored 3 runs. He didn't collect any RBIs, though. He's having a very good season so far, batting .358. St. Louis (N) scored 3 runs on 15 hits.
 
Friday 4/14/1899: Pat Callaghan has 2000th career hits
WASHINGTON - Washington's Pat Callaghan showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Boston (A) on Friday. His hit in the 9th inning was a single off Charlie Dewald. In 14 years of big league action so far, Pat has compiled a batting average of .299, along with 82 homeruns and 1065 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'
 
Monday 4/10/1899: Al Mays shuts out Philadelphia (A) on 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA (A) - Baltimore's right-hander Al Mays is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Philadelphia (A) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Mays 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 41st shutouts in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Mays (3-1) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 63 of 96 pitches for strikes. Kip Selbach provided Baltimore with the offense Mays needed as he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
 
Monday 4/10/1899: Cleveland's Sweeney wins Player of the Week award
Cleveland's pitcher Charlie Sweeney had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. The National League's best player of the week was St. Louis (N)'s Bill Dammann, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N) is without its right-hander Ed Dugan for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Hugh Duffy in a game against New York (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Chicago (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Dugan had suffered a Spasms Back.
 
Monday 4/3/1899: Chicago (N)'s Young out for 8 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N) is without its ace Cy Young for at least 8 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bob Clark in a game against Brooklyn. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Chicago (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Young had suffered a Strained Tricep Muscle.
