New York (A)'s right-hander put up fabulous numbers this year which earned him the highest award a pitcher can receive. Sheriff has a record of 24-15 this season, with an ERA of 3.63. In 379 Innings he was able to strike out 229 batters. He has 32 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! The National League Most Valuable Pitcher winner was announced today as well, with Chicago (N)'s right-hander Percy Miller taking home the desired trophy. He certainly earned it, he struck fear into hitters all year long. Opposing players hit .249 against Percy this season. Sunday 10/1/1931: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced The best month of September in the American League certainly had Washington's right-hander Bobo Newsom, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He went 4-1 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 0.64. He struck out 20 in 42 innings. Bobo got two complete game shutouts as well! Friday 9/29/1931: Freddie Fitzsimmons shuts out Detroit on 2 hits CLEVELAND - Cleveland's right-hander Freddie Fitzsimmons will never forget this day. The 30-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Detroit on Friday. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Fitzsimmons (7-7) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 95 pitches. Wally Kopf helped Fitzsimmons at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 4 runs. Cleveland scored 7 runs on 11 hits. |
Wednesday 9/27/1931: Bobo Newsom blanks Detroit with a 1-hitter WASHINGTON - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Washington's Bobo Newsom did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Detroit. Newsom (12-6) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 61 of 98 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Buddy Myer helped Newsom at the plate, he went 3 for 4, scoring two runs. Wednesday 9/20/1931: New York (N)'s Barnhart out for 5 weeks NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s right-hander Les Barnhart suffered a severe injury on Wednesday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Pittsburgh he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Barnhart was examined by specialists. Monday 9/18/1931: Cleveland's Lundy severely injured CLEVELAND - Cleveland's third baseman Dick Lundy will miss about 5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 9th inning of the game between Cleveland and Washington. Sunday 9/10/1931: Pittsburgh's Harry Heilmann laces 3000th career hit PITTSBURGH - Harry Heilmann got a standing ovation from 37301 fans in Pittsburgh, who witnessed his 3000th career hit. He hit a double in the 7th off Jake Hehl for number 3000. In 16 years of big league action so far, Harry has compiled a batting average of .315, along with 208 homeruns and 1593 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame! |

Thursday 8/31/1931: Chicago (A)'s Tony Lazzeri gets the cycle NEW YORK (A) - Tony Lazzeri led Chicago (A) to a 15-12 win over New York (A) by squeezing five hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! A two-run double off Bernie Henderson in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. A RBI triple off Bernie Henderson in the 3rd inning, accounted for his 2nd hit. A single in the 4th off Bernie Henderson accounted for his 3rd hit. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Red Ruffing in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 503 feet from home plate. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! A 430 foot drive to right-center marked his 5th hit, a solo homerun off Waite Hoyt in the 8th inning. Tony scored 4 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! Friday 8/18/1931: Goose Goslin punishes New York (A) with five hits, cycle NEW YORK (A) - Goose Goslin is a pretty good hitter, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. His 1st hit, off Ivy Andrews in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. His 2nd hit was a double off Ivy Andrews in the 3rd inning. A single in the 5th off Ivy Andrews accounted for his 3rd hit. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Ivy Andrews in the 7th inning, cleared the fence in right-center. His 5th hit was a two-run triple off Ivy Andrews in the 8th inning. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Goose did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He hit .476 with 8 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 21 at bats. Wilson Redus wins his 6th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .481 with 8 RBI and slugged .926 in 27 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 11 game hitting streak right now. Philadelphia (A)'s ace Ed Walsh will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Cleveland where he left the field in the 6th inning. Philadelphia (A) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Walsh had suffered a Broken Elbow. His ERA of 4.29 helped him to a 12-12 record this year. He struck out 161 and walked 65 in 216 innings. Monday 7/10/1931: Clay Roe quiets Cincinnati bats with shutout CINCINNATI - Philadelphia (N)'s lefty Clay Roe is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cincinnati found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Roe 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 15th shutouts in his career. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Roe (12-8) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 3, throwing 129 pitches. Saturday 7/1/1931: Cincinnati's Ott severely injured CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's leftfielder Mel Ott will miss about 10 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 5th inning of the game between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. He dove for a drive off the bat of Jimmy Lyons, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Broken Ribs was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His season features a batting average of .287 (81 hits in 282 AB), 15 doubles, one triple and 22 homeruns. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Crowder will miss about 6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Finger. Saturday 7/1/1931: Cleveland's Knowlton earns Pitcher of the Month award Cleveland's Bill Knowlton had a terrific June, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s catcher Harry Mccurdy suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Mccurdy laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Wrist. Harry has gone 73 for 252 (.290) this season, hitting 4 taters and driving in 42 runs. Friday 6/23/1931: Pittsburgh's Russ severely injured PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's season took a blow when Pythias Russ suffered a serious injury in the game against Chicago (N). He was hurt when ge got bowled over in a scary collision at home plate. Russ will probaby miss 5 weeks. Russ was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Wrist. His season numbers are: .312 AVG, 64 hits, 10 doubles, 5 triples and 7 bombs, along with 44 RBI and 31 runs scored. |
Thursday 6/22/1931: Lefty Grove shuts out Philadelphia (N) on 2 hits ST. LOUIS (N) - Lefty Grove took the mound and never left. And Philadelphia (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. St. Louis (N)'s southpaw gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 9 career shutouts in 166 games started. Grove (11-7) struck out 8 and issued 3 BB, throwing 73 of 123 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Chicago (N) on just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Roe (9-7) was really unbelievable, striking out 20 and walking 2, throwing 82 of 130 pitches for strikes. Philadelphia (N)'s leftfielder Wilson Redus finished 3 for 4, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Roe. Philadelphia (N) improved its record to 42-27, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits. |

Monday 5/22/1931: New York (A)'s Ellis wins Player of the Week award James Ellis wins his 8th Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He hit .545 with 9 RBI and slugged .773 in 22 at bats. The National League's best player of the week was Cincinnati's Earl Averill, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. In 21 at bats he hit .524 with 1 HR and 8 RBI. This year Averill drove in 47 and scored 37 runs while batting .325 with 15 bombs. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! |
Thursday 5/18/1931: Earl Averill punishes Pittsburgh with five hits, cycle PITTSBURGH - Earl Averill is a pretty good hitter, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. His 2nd hit, off Rufus Smith in the 2nd inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. Number 3 in the 4th inning accounted for a double. A single in the 6th off Dick Mccabe accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! A single in the 9th off Marv Gudat accounted for his 5th hit. Earl did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 50 hits this season, accounting for a .316 batting average. 30 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Earl. Earl Averill was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 5/10/1930. |
Monday 5/15/1931: Player of the Week honors go to Stock and Hornsby The American League Player of the Week award goes to Milt Stock, Chicago (A)'s starting third baseman. Sunday 5/7/1931: Milt Stock has 3000th career hits CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s third baseman Milt Stock was in good mood after the game against Boston (A), and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 3000th career hit. Along with his 3000 hits, Milt collected 39 homeruns and 1142 RBI in 18 seasons. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He hit a single in the 8th off Foster Edwards for number 3000. The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player. |
Saturday 5/6/1931: Chicago (N)'s Charles Smith has great day with five hits CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Charles Smith once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Cincinnati's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Saturday. A pitch from Red Proctor in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 420 feet from home plate in right-center. In the 5th inning he belted a double off Red Proctor. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Jake Hehl in the 6th inning, cleared the fence in right field. A double off Uel Eubanks in the 15th inning accounted for his 5th hit. He collected a single in the 1st, driving in one run. Charles did drive in 3 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 51 hits this season, accounting for a .402 batting average. The final score of the game was 13-12. |
Wednesday 5/3/1931: Si Johnson blanks Washington with a 2-hitter WASHINGTON - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Cleveland's Si Johnson did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Washington. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Johnson (3-4) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 64 of 107 pitches for strikes. George Collins helped Johnson at the plate, he finished 2 for 4, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. Friday 4/28/1931: Jakie May (PIT) will miss 5 weeks PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh is without its lefty Jakie May for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Bill Perkins in a game against Boston (N). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Strained Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season May compiled an ERA of 3.89, going 2-3 in 6 starts. He fanned 12 while giving up 47 hits in 44 innings. |
Monday 4/24/1931: Player of the Week honors go to Lazzeri and Scales Tony Lazzeri from Chicago (A) wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Tony pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .435 with 2 HR and 8 RBI while slugging .870. George Scales from Philadelphia (N) wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He hit .500 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.182 in 22 at bats. Tuesday 4/18/1931: Al Simmons out for 6 weeks CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s Al Simmons suffered a serious injury Tuesday in a game against Washington. Simmons fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Back Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Al has gone 14 for 64 (.219) this season, hitting 3 longballs and driving in 11 runs. He has scored 7 runs on his own. |
Monday 4/17/1931: Hauser and Averill win Player of the Week award The American League's best player of the week was Philadelphia (A)'s Joe Hauser, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. He hit .545 with 7 RBI and slugged 1.227 in 22 at bats. His season features a batting average of .362 (17 hits in 47 AB), 3 doubles, one triple and 5 bombs. Hauser collected 10 RBI and 15 runs as well. Thursday 4/6/1931: Boston (A)'s Wilson out for 5-6 weeks BOSTON (A) - Boston (A)'s leftfielder Hack Wilson will miss at least 5-6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Wilson was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Calf Muscle. |
