Thursday 10/19/1964: Pizarro (MIN) and Smith (CIN) win Cy Young Award
Minnesota's southpaw Juan Pizarro was untouchable all year long. His work paid off today as the AL named him the Cy Young Award winner! Opposing players hit .209 against Juan this season. While posting an ERA of 2.92 he went 32-10 in 46 starts, fanning 317 and walking 127 hitters. He has 28 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 2nd in the AL in ERA and 1st in wins! Pizarro wins the award for the 2nd time in his 7-year career. Awards may not be the most important thing for Frank Smith, but Cincinnati's right-hander smiled as he was named the NL Cy Young Award winner. In 44 starts this year Frank struck out 291 batters in 344.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.48, his record 29-7. Frank has pitched 2 shutouts and 9 complete games. He's 1st in the NL in ERA and 1st in wins! Smith wins the award for the 9th time in his 14-year career.
 
Thursday 10/19/1964: Most Valuable Player Award winners announced
The 1964 AL Most Valuable Player Award winner has been announced. It's Boston's rightfielder Roberto Clemente who really had a great offensive year. His season numbers are: .348 AVG, 209 hits, 46 doubles, 4 triples and 45 bombs, along with 144 RBI and 139 runs scored. He's 1st in the AL in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 1st in RBI! The 1964 NL Most Valuable Player Award winner has been announced as well. It's Milwaukee's first baseman Frank Howard who really had a great offensive year. Frank has gone 190 for 589 (.323) this season, hitting 63 longballs and driving in 146 runs. He has scored 123 runs on his own. He's 1st in the NL in RBIs and 1st in homeruns!
 
Thursday 10/19/1964: Veale and Perry receive Rookie Of The Year Award
Chicago (A)'s pitcher Bob Veale has worked hard to reach the big leagues. His work paid off today as the AL named him the Rookie Of The Year Award winner! His ERA of 4.42 helped him to a 26-11 record this year. He struck out 222 and walked 148 in 309.2 innings. Bob has pitched 3 shutouts and 10 complete games. He's 3rd in the AL in wins! Gaylord Perry was named the NL Rookie Of The Year Award winner today. Houston's pitcher put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 26 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! This season Perry compiled an ERA of 3.76, going 20-7 in 32 starts. He fanned 161 while giving up 258 hits in 256.1 innings. He has 18 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 6th in the NL in ERA and 7th in wins!
 
Monday 10/9/1964: Los Angeles (N)'s Boozer wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Los Angeles (A)'s Dick Allen this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Dick went 8 for 18 (.444), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 7 RBI. Allen has walked 106 times this year and posts a .420 OBP. While batting .307, 163 for 531, he has driven in 104 runs. The NL's best player of the week was Los Angeles (N)'s John Boozer, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 2.00 while going 2-0. A complete game added to his brilliant performance.
 
Friday 10/6/1964: Stan Williams dominates Chicago (N), throws NO-HITTER
PITTSBURGH - Stan Williams had some fun again. REAL fun. Chicago (N) hitters did not. Pittsburgh's right-hander fired a no-hitter in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 135 games started. 'Today I just felt great. I had a good feeling while warming up, and I knew something special was about to happen.' Williams (20-9) struck out 9 and walked 2, throwing 72 of 118 pitches for strikes. Tony Kubek helped Williams at the plate, he collected 1 hit in 1 trips to the plate, stroking a double. Pittsburgh scored 1 run on 5 hits.
 
Monday 10/2/1964: Player of the Week honors go to Charles and Bailey
Washington's third baseman Ed Charles had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Charles helped his team with an average of .421 and 9 RBI in 19 at bats. Ed is hitting .285 this year, with 149 hits in 522 at bats. He has driven in 93 runs, slugging .531. Chicago (N)'s third baseman Bob Bailey had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. Bailey helped his team with an average of .545 and 9 RBI in 22 at bats.
 
Sunday 10/1/1964: Cincinnati's Miller named Pitcher of the Month
It's the 1st time that the AL Pitcher of the Month award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Bob Veale. He struck out 36 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 36 innings. His ERA in September was 1.25. Bob fired two shutouts! Opposing players hit .243 against Bob this season. While posting an ERA of 4.30 he went 25-10 in 39 starts, fanning 212 and walking 141 hitters. Bob Miller couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the NL thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of 3.87 helped him to a 15-8 record this year. He struck out 106 and walked 60 in 195.1 innings. He has 6 complete games and one shutout.
 
Sunday 10/1/1964: Batter of the Month award winners announced
It's the 1st time that the AL Batter of the Month award goes to Cleveland's leftfielder Pete Whisenant. Whisenant helped his team with an average of .360 and 39 RBI in 111 at bats. His season numbers are: .303 AVG, 155 hits, 25 doubles, one triple and 27 longballs, along with 113 RBI and 78 runs scored. The Batter of the Month award in the NL goes to Philadelphia (N)'s Joe Torre this time, as the catcher displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Joe was on fire, hitting .392 with 11 homeruns and 37 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .380, Joe hit .323 and slugged .547. He has collected 128 runs batted in this year.
 
Tuesday 9/26/1964: Bob Bailey nabs six hits against Cincinnati
CINCINNATI - Bob Bailey saw the ball really well, leading Chicago (N) to a 22-2 win over Cincinnati. His six hits thrilled his teammates and coaches, and Bob seemed happy as well after the game. In the 7th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Danny Coombs. He collected singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) , in the 3rd inning (one RBI) , in the 4th inning , in the 5th inning (one RBI) and in the 8th . Bob did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .294 this season, with 15 HR and 61 RBI.
 
Monday 9/25/1964: Gentile and Mccovey win Player of the Week award
Jim Gentile wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Jim was on fire, hitting .571 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. This year Gentile drove in 95 and scored 100 runs while batting .286 with 33 taters. Willie Mccovey from Philadelphia (N) wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. Willie was on fire, hitting .526 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. Mccovey has walked 82 times this year and posts a .437 OBP. While batting .350, 179 for 511, he has driven in 108 runs. He's 5th in the NL in batting, 5th in homeruns and 9th in RBI!
 
Monday 9/18/1964: Player of the Week honors go to Whisenant and Bouchee
The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Cleveland's Pete Whisenant this time, as the leftfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Pete pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .448 with 3 HR and 11 RBI while slugging .828. It's the 8th time that the NL Player of the Week award goes to Houston's first baseman Ed Bouchee. Ed was on fire, hitting .400 with 3 HR and 12 RBI.
 
Friday 9/15/1964: Stan Williams pitches 1-hit shutout against San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO - Pittsburgh's right-hander Stan Williams is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking San Francisco on just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Williams (17-9) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 61 of 105 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Pittsburgh was shortstop Tony Kubek, he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, homering once, hitting a double, scoring three times and collecting 3 RBI. Pittsburgh improved its record to 74-71, scoring 11 runs on 12 hits.
 
Thursday 9/14/1964: Pittsburgh's Tony Gonzalez slams three taters
SAN FRANCISCO - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Pittsburgh's rightfielder Tony Gonzalez accomplished that feat in a 8-3 win over San Francisco. A 362 foot drive to right field marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Pedro Ramos in the 3rd inning. His 2nd shot, off Pedro Ramos in the 4th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. His 3rd shot, a solo homerun off Pedro Ramos in the 9th inning, cleared the fence in right field. Tony stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, with three runs scored with 4 RBI. On 9/9/1964, Carl Yastrzemski was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game. The final score of the game was 8-3.
 
Monday 9/11/1964: Pittsburgh's Joe Ginsberg gets milestone hit
HOUSTON - Joe Ginsberg got a standing ovation from 11365 fans in Houston, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 2nd off Gaylord Perry for number 2000. In 15 years of big league action so far, Joe has compiled a batting average of .293, along with 135 homeruns and 978 RBI. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!'

The Player of the Week award in the AL goes to Boston's Willie Mays this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. DETROIT - Paul Toth had his best stuff going, and Detroit hitters had nothing to cheer about. Cleveland's right-hander pitched a 1-hitter, his 2nd shutout of the season. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Toth (13-17) fanned 4 and walked 4, throwing 103 pitches. The hitting star for Cleveland was rightfielder Pete Whisenant, he finished 3 for 4, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. Cleveland improved its record to 50-89, scoring 9 runs on 11 hits.
 
Tuesday 9/5/1964: It's NO-NO time for John Boozer against New York (N)
LOS ANGELES (N) - With his best stuff going, Los Angeles (N)'s John Boozer overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. New York (N) had no chance, getting NO hits against the right-hander. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Boozer (18-15) struck out 5 and issued 4 BB, throwing 69 of 131 pitches for strikes. Earl Battey helped Boozer at the plate, he finished 2 for 4, blasting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 78-57, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits.
 
Monday 9/4/1964: Kansas City's Orsino wins Player of the Week award
John Orsino wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. AL pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. John pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .526 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging 1.000. John has gone 132 for 415 (.318) this season, hitting 19 longballs and driving in 72 runs. Boston's pitcher Don Drysdale is the AL winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in August. He started 7 games in August, going 5-2 and compiling an ERA of 2.21 in 61 innings. Don fanned 39 hitters. Tuesday 8/29/1964: Mickey Mantle (NYY) will miss 6 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s centerfielder Mickey Mantle will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Inflamed Hamstring Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Mantle has hit for a .307 average this season. He has 47 extra base hits along with 237 total bases, resulting in a .587 slugging percentage.
 
Monday 8/28/1964: Cash and Skizas win Player of the Week award
Detroit's first baseman Norm Cash had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Norm was on fire, hitting .458 with 6 HR and 10 RBI. Los Angeles (N)'s shortstop Lou Skizas had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. Skizas helped his team with an average of .480 and 7 RBI in 25 at bats. CHICAGO (A) - It was a great day for Chicago (A)'s left-hander Bob Veale. The 28-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against Cleveland on Tuesday. Veale (19-10) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 59 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Billy Martin helped Veale at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring 2 runs. Chicago (A) improved its record to 67-55, scoring 6 runs on 10 hits.
 
Tuesday 8/22/1964: Juan Marichal out for 8-9 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's ace Juan Marichal suffered a severe injury on Tuesday and will be out for at least 8-9 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against New York (A) he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Detroit wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Marichal had suffered a Herniated Disc Back. This season Marichal compiled an ERA of 4.09, going 16-14 in 34 starts. He fanned 160 while giving up 277 hits in 275 innings. Juan has pitched 5 shutouts and 22 complete games. He's 8th in the AL in ERA and 5th in wins!

Thursday 8/17/1964: Boston's Roberto Clemente slams three taters
BOSTON - Roberto Clemente was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Boston to a 11-1 win over Detroit by homering three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Juan Marichal in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 393 feet from home plate. A pitch from Juan Marichal in the 5th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 418 feet from home plate in right-center. Number 3 in the 8th inning, a shot estimated at 431 feet, cleared the wall in right field. Overall he finished 5 for 5, hitting 2 doubles, scoring FIVE times and collecting 5 RBI. Frank Howard was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 6/15/1964.
 
Monday 8/14/1964: It's NO-NO time for Tom Parsons against Milwaukee
NEW YORK (N) - Tom Parsons had his best stuff going, and Milwaukee hitters were chanceless. New York (N)'s right-hander fired a NO-NO, his 2nd shutout of the season. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today. That's a dream coming true for me!' Parsons (4-15) struck out 2 and issued 2 BB, throwing 56 of 98 pitches for strikes. Ed Kranepool helped Parsons at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
 
Monday 8/14/1964: Altman (KC) and Demeter (PIT) win P.O.W. award
George Altman from Kansas City wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the AL. George pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .360 with 6 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.080. This year Altman drove in 81 and scored 73 runs while batting .335 with 27 longballs. He's 4th in the AL in batting, 8th in homeruns and 8th in RBI! Pittsburgh's centerfielder Don Demeter had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the NL Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .560 and hit .560, while driving in 2 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Demeter has walked 43 times this year and posts a .403 OBP. While batting .334, 141 for 422, he has driven in 59 runs. He's 10th in the NL in batting!
 
Friday 8/11/1964: Los Angeles (N)'s Duke Snider gets milestone hit
PITTSBURGH - Duke Snider got a standing ovation from 31820 fans in Pittsburgh, who witnessed his 3000th career hit. Along with his 3000 hits, Duke collected 716 homeruns and 2190 RBI in 17 seasons. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' With no outs in the 3rd inning, Duke drilled a triple, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.

He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! The NL's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's Tony Kubek, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. CINCINNATI - Floyd Robinson hits 'em where they ain't. Cincinnati certainly agrees as San Francisco's rightfielder unloaded five hits and hitting for the cycle. NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s centerfielder Gus Bell was in good mood after the game against Chicago (N), and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. WASHINGTON - Washington beat Boston 9-2, but that was not the real story of the game. Bill Freehan was, as he went deep three times. WASHINGTON - Minnesota's left-hander Bill Pleis will never forget this day. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Washington on Thursday. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Pleis (2-1) struck out 4 and walked 2, throwing 65 of 115 pitches for strikes. NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s Mickey Mantle showed a smile on his face after he belted his 500th career homerun against Los Angeles (A) on Sunday. A 357 foot drive to left field marked his 500th career bomb, a two-run homerun off Bob Buhl in the 2nd inning. In 13 years of big league action so far, Mickey has compiled a batting average of .318, along with 2012 hits and 1413 RBI. Mickey hit 30+ homeruns in a season 11 times, hitting 40 bombs 8 times. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
 
Friday 5/26/1964: Eddie Mathews parks three against Baltimore
BALTIMORE - New York (A) beat Baltimore 11-2, but that was not the real story of the game. Eddie Mathews was, as he went deep three times. His 1st shot, a three-run homerun off Don Larsen in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in center field. A pitch from Don Larsen in the 3rd inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 470 feet from home plate in right field. NEW YORK (N) - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Houston's first baseman Ed Bouchee after the 9-8 win over New York (N). A RBI double off Sonny Siebert in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. Number 3 in the 4th inning accounted for a RBI double. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Jim Umbricht in the 7th inning, landed an estimated 453 feet from home plate. He collected singles in the 2nd inning and in the 9th . CHICAGO (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s leftfielder Duke Snider already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one, unloading for his 700th career homerun. Along with his 700 homeruns, Duke collected 2921 hits and 2129 RBI in 17 seasons. Duke has managed to hit 30+ homeruns in a season 14 times, and he topped 40 homeruns 11 times. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' The historic drive, a two-run homerun off Steve Blass in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 377 feet from home plate. The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
 
Wednesday 5/3/1964: Houston's Perry severely injured
HOUSTON - When it rains, it pours. Houston's right-hander Gaylord Perry will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (N) where he left the field in the 1st inning. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Surgery will be performed next week. Gaylord has a record of 6-0 this season, with an ERA of 2.70. In 53.1 Innings he was able to strike out 33 batters. He's 10th in the NL in ERA and 1st in wins!

Saturday 4/29/1964: Ed Bailey blisters three bombs
CINCINNATI - Ed Bailey was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Cincinnati to a 11-3 win over New York (N) by homering three times. A pitch from Tom Parsons in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 455 feet from home plate in left-center. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Willard Schmidt. A 352 foot drive to right field marked his 3rd bomb, a three-run homerun off Don Mcmahon in the 6th inning. Overall he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, with FOUR runs scored with 5 RBI. His homerun total this year is 6, along with 11 RBI.
 
Saturday 4/29/1964: Juan Pizarro fires 2-hitter against Detroit
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's left-hander Juan Pizarro is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Detroit on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 16th time he has done it in his career. Pizarro (5-0) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 62 of 99 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' The hitting star for Minnesota was Minnesota improved its record to 13-10, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
 
Friday 4/28/1964: Bill Stafford quiets Cleveland bats with shutout
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's hitters looked uncomfortable, and Minnesota's Bill Stafford didn't help them. The right-hander fired his 1st shutout of the season, a 1-hitter. Stafford (2-1) fanned 6 and walked 2, throwing 111 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Wes Covington provided Minnesota with the offense Stafford needed as he finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. Minnesota scored 4 runs on 8 hits.
 
Monday 4/24/1964: St. Louis (N)'s Freese wins Player of the Week award
Baltimore's centerfielder Bill Virdon had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Bill was on fire, hitting .524 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. The NL's best player of the week was St. Louis (N)'s Gene Freese, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Gene was on fire, hitting .567 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. Freese has walked 4 times this year and posts a .412 OBP. While batting .384, 28 for 73, he has driven in 18 runs. He's 6th in the NL in batting, 4th in homeruns and 3rd in RBI!
 
Monday 4/17/1964: Stan Williams shuts out Philadelphia (N) on 2 hits
PHILADELPHIA (N) - Great days are rare. But not for Pittsburgh's right-hander Stan Williams. Philadelphia (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Williams (3-0) was really unbelievable, striking out 17 and walking 1, throwing 81 of 125 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Joe Caffie provided Pittsburgh with the offense Williams needed as he stroked 1 hit in 5 AB, blasting a homerun. Pittsburgh scored 2 runs on 9 hits.
 
Monday 4/17/1964: Camilo Pascual turns in great performance against Baltimore
WASHINGTON - With his best stuff going, Washington's Camilo Pascual overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Baltimore had no chance, collecting just 2 hits against the right-hander. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Pascual (2-0) struck out 8 and issued 3 BB, throwing 64 of 109 pitches for strikes. Tom Tresh helped Pascual at the plate, he went 2 for 3, homering twice, scoring twice with 3 RBI. Washington scored 5 runs on 7 hits.
 
Monday 4/17/1964: Kansas City's Grim wins Player of the Week award
Kansas City's pitcher Bob Grim had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the AL Player of the Week. Grim was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.93. Along the way he struck out 14 in 14 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. The NL Player of the Week award goes to Frank Howard, Milwaukee's starting first baseman. Frank was on fire, hitting .423 with 7 HR and 15 RBI.
 
Wednesday 4/12/1964: Ed Rakow dominates San Francisco, gives up just 2 hits
ST. LOUIS (N) - St. Louis (N)'s right-hander Ed Rakow will never forget this day. The 27-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against San Francisco on Wednesday. Rakow (1-1) struck out 3 and issued 2 BB, throwing 65 of 110 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Lee Walls helped Rakow at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. St. Louis (N) improved its record to 5-3, scoring 2 runs on 4 hits.
 
Wednesday 4/12/1964: Bob Grim fires 2-hitter against Los Angeles (A)
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's right-hander Bob Grim is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Grim (2-1) struck out 8 and issued 2 BB, throwing 66 of 100 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Kansas City was leftfielder George Altman, he finished 2 for 3, homering twice, scoring twice with 3 RBI. Kansas City improved its record to 5-3, scoring 7 runs on 11 hits.
 
Monday 4/10/1964: Los Angeles (A)'s Allen wins Player of the Week award
The AL Player of the Week award goes to Dick Allen, Los Angeles (A)'s starting third baseman. Allen helped his team with an average of .400 and 8 RBI in 20 at bats. Frank Howard from Milwaukee wins his 5th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the NL. Frank pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .524 with 6 HR and 18 RBI while slugging 1.476.
 
Friday 4/7/1964: Sandy Amoros hits for the cycle against Los Angeles (A)
CHICAGO (A) - Sandy Amoros led Chicago (A) to a 11-6 win over Los Angeles (A) by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! Number 1 in the 2nd inning accounted for a double. His 2nd hit, a solo homerun off Bob Buhl in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 416 feet from home plate. Hit number 3 followed in the 6th inning, a triple. A single in the 8th off Bobby Bolin accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Sandy did drive in one while scoring 4 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .421. 24 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Sandy. J.c. Martin was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 9/11/1963.
